Specify the inside before the outside
Two sofas can wear the same fabric and sit completely differently. Lock these internals in writing before sampling:
- Frame: kiln-dried solid wood plus engineered components, corner-blocked and stapled — ask what the suspension uses (S-springs vs elastic webbing).
- Foam: seat density in D (35D is a common wholesale benchmark; below 30D sags early), with feather or fiber topper where the design calls for it.
- Legs and hardware: solid wood vs stainless, and whether legs are bolted or merely screwed into the frame.
Fabric and leather: grade names are not grades
"Italian leather" and "tech fabric" are marketing words until you pin them down. For leather, ask for thickness (mm) and whether the seating area is full-grain while sides are split. For fabrics, ask grammage and abrasion cycles (Martindale). A wholesale sofa program should come with a fabric book you can show your own customers — this is standard from the Foshan workrooms that supply Italian-minimalist designs.
Plan the container around bulk, not pieces
Sofas eat volume: a 3-seater can consume 2–3 CBM disassembled. Practical wholesale structures:
- Mixed sofa container: 3-seaters + 2-seaters + armchairs from the same design family, 15–25 pieces per 1×20ft depending on construction.
- Cross-category: sofas paired with coffee tables and lounge pieces to fill the dead volume above armrests.
- Knock-down design: models with removable legs and modular backs pack dramatically better — ask which designs ship KD.

Inspection points specific to sofas
Before loading, a sofa inspection should cover: seam straightness on every unit (not just the sample), foam firmness consistency across the batch, leg torque tests, and fabric lot consistency — dye lots differ between production runs, and mixed lots in one container are a customer-service problem waiting to happen.
